Things to do in Guadalajara

Guadalajara, the Perla Tapatía, is much more than mariachi and tequila (though those are must-sees). With its rich culture, history, gastronomy, and hospitality, we want to recommend some places and experiences you shouldn't miss while in this beautiful city.

Historic Center and the Guadalajara Cathedral

The heart of the city beats in its Historic Center, where colonial architecture and modern life intertwine. The Metropolitan Cathedral is a must-see, with its iconic neo-Gothic façade and interior filled with sacred art. Nearby, you'll find the Rotunda of the Illustrious People of Jalisco, a monument honoring figures who have shaped Jalisco's history.

Hospicio Cabañas

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hospicio Cabañas is a former orphanage turned museum. Here you can admire the famous murals of José Clemente Orozco, a great exponent of Mexican art who left his mark on art history. A walk through its vast courtyards is perfect for a peaceful afternoon.

Tlaquepaque: A Magical Town within the City

If you enjoy crafts and local culture, you can't miss visiting Tlaquepaque, just 20 minutes from downtown. This charming neighborhood is famous for its art shops, galleries, and artisan workshops. Its cobblestone streets are full of color and tradition. We recommend having a meal at El Parián, where you'll always find live mariachi music and delicious local food.

Zapopan and the Basilica

For a moment of peace and reflection, visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan, home to the venerated Virgin of Zapopan, the city's patroness. The area around the basilica is perfect for a relaxing stroll, with its charming cafés. Don’t forget to try a popsicle or a refreshing Horchata from La Michoacana!

Guadalajara Zoo

If you enjoy wildlife, Guadalajara Zoo is an excellent choice. Considered one of the best in Latin America, it hosts a wide variety of exotic animals and features interactive areas such as the herpetarium, Masai Mara Safari, and Antarctica exhibit. You can also enjoy stunning views from the cable car that crosses the zoo, offering a unique perspective of the Huentitán Canyon.

Acuario Michín

For marine life lovers, Acuario Michín is a must-see. This modern aquarium is home to over 350 aquatic species from Mexico and around the world. Visitors can enjoy interactive experiences like feeding rays, getting up close to sharks, and participating in educational activities about marine conservation. The aquarium also features zones dedicated to the biodiversity of Mexican indigenous cultures, combining education, entertainment, and respect for the environment. Fun fact: this was where Jake and Lizzie had their first in-person date, very romantic!

MUSA (Museum of the Arts, University of Guadalajara)

For art lovers, MUSA is a true gem. This museum hosts a vast collection of contemporary Mexican and international art. The building itself is impressive, adorned with murals by the famous painter José Clemente Orozco, including the striking "The Creator and Rebel Man." The museum also organizes fascinating temporary exhibitions, ranging from photography to sculpture and painting.

It's a place full of history and curiosities that communication and culture enthusiasts will greatly enjoy.

If you have time to leave the city, we recommend a trip to the Chapala Lakeside, just over an hour from Guadalajara. Lake Chapala is the largest lake in Mexico and offers spectacular views and leisurely walks along its picturesque boardwalk. Visit the charming town of Ajijic, known for its bohemian atmosphere, art galleries, and tranquility. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a sunny day.
